If you’re collecting unemployment in Oklahoma, now may be a good time to start considering returning to work. Because, thanks to a new government initiative, you may earn $1,200 for doing so.

How Can You Earn a $1,200 Stipend by Returning to Work in Oklahoma?

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt announced the state government is offering a $1,200 stipend to the first 20,000 residents who get off unemployment starting June 28, 2021. The stipend is available to unemployed Oklahoma residents who accept a qualifying job where they work at least 32 hours per week.

Stitt’s announcement comes after the Oklahoma government said it will no longer provide a $300-a-week federal supplement starting June 26. At this point, the government will stop providing pandemic unemployment assistance to gig workers and contractors as well.

What Does the $1,200 Stipend Mean for the State of Oklahoma and Its Residents?

Nearly 90,000 Oklahoma residents were receiving a $300-a-week federal supplement as of May 18, 2021, an Oklahoma Employment Security Commission official told The Oklahoman. The $1,200 stipend will ultimately replace the $300-a-week supplement. And, it could lead many unemployed Oklahoma residents to pursue jobs in the months and weeks to come.

Of course, unemployed Oklahoma residents can find lots of job opportunities at their disposal. Oklahoma’s unemployment rate was 4.3% as of April 2021, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Comparatively, the national unemployment rate was 6.3% at that time.
