Shift work is a fact of life for employees in certain industries. The first shift refers to the work schedule held by most employees in the U.S. While the traditional first shift lasts from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., employees may also work between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. or 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. depending on the needs and preferences of the business.
Also known as the swing shift, the second shift stretches from around 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. to midnight or 1 a.m. While workers don’t have to stay in the office overnight with these shifts, they will likely miss out on having dinner with their families.
Called the graveyard or overnight shift, this work schedule begins between 10 p.m. and midnight and ends between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. While some employees enjoy working nights and being able to run errands during the day, others struggle to shift their sleep schedules.
Some employees work the same hours every week; this is known as fixed shift work. One of the benefits of this schedule is that it enables employees to make plans knowing they’ll be free.
On the other hand, some workers have rotating shifts. In other words, they might work first shift one week and third shift the next. This schedule can make it difficult for employees to anticipate when they’ll be available to see family and friends.
