It’s no secret that interviewing for jobs is stressful. However, the most anxiety-inducing part of the process might be yet to come. We’re referring of course to waiting to hear back from prospective employers. The good news is you don’t have to sit by the phone. Here are some tips for inquiring with hiring managers to see if you got the job:
Short and Sweet
When following up after a job interview, it pays to keep your message short and to the point. Start by thanking the interviewer for his or her time and then reiterate your excitement for the position. You might also want to remind the interviewer of a positive aspect of the conversation or point of common interest. Finish off your letter by inviting the interviewer to contact you with any questions or concerns and stress that you’re excited to hear back; hopefully, he or she will respond quickly.
After sending your thank you message, wait a few days for the interviewer to respond. The odds are good that you will hear back within a day or two. If there’s been no word for a week or two though, don’t hesitate to send an email checking in. The goal of this message is to let the company know you’re still interested and looking forward to hearing back.
Don’t Be Afraid to Seem Desperate
Sometimes job seekers refrain from contacting employers out of a fear of looking desperate for the position. While you certainly don’t want to send multiple emails – that might come across as annoying – it’s perfectly fine to check in once or twice. Not only does staying in touch remind the hiring manager that you exist, but it also shows your interest in the role. And who knows? Even if the position you applied for has been filled, the hiring manager might just consider you for another role at the company.
