Are you responsible to recruit a competent entry level materials handler for your staffing company?  Do you know what essential basic skills to look for?

Although, this may be an entry level position, it is an important one to maintain safe, smooth and expeditious warehouse operations.  Plus, entry level positions can move up in your organization, so it imperative that you, as a hiring manager, identify and hire the right personnel the first time.

Here are some imperative skills that will assist you to identify appropriate candidates.

Good Communication Skills

Must be able to play well with others.  Although this sounds rather funny, in this position, a material handler works with many other people and departments. They must be able to ask the right questions when information is needed, have a dialogue with co-workers and superiors and explain any problems thoroughly.

Basic Math and Reading Skills

Must be able to read work orders, count and record number of product or units received and moved. This includes adding, subtracting, and multiplying.

Time Management and Awareness

The candidate should display promptness and realize that time is a valuable commodity to the company’s overall operations.  If they are tardy for an interview, or switch the interview dates and times, this is not a good sign that they will show up to work on time.

Ability to Follow Directions and Protocols

Safety is a primary concern when working in a warehouse setting.  The candidate should display the ability to learn and practice the company’s safety policies. Additionally, policies pertaining to the staffing company’s overall operations need to be adhered to.

Physical Requirements

Material Handlers may be lifting, moving and sorting heavy products.  Additionally, depending on the materials they are handling, the use of heavy equipment is required.  As a recruiter, you need to be aware of the actual work requirements of the job to determine if the candidate is a good fit.
