How Long Should Your Resume Really Be?

The internet makes it easy for job seekers to apply for just about any position they desire in seconds. However, it also means recruiters are receiving dozens, if not hundreds, of resumes for every open position – and rejecting them just a fast. In fact, studies show that recruiters spend just six or seven seconds glancing at a resume before filing it in the trash.

Here are some of American StaffCorp’s top tips for keeping your resume short and sweet.

Entry-Level Resumes

Contrary to popular opinion, there’s no hard-and-fast rule for resume length. However, conventional wisdom says that new graduates and entry-level workers should aim for CVs that are both short and sweet: ideally a page long. Along with your educational experience, be sure to highlight internships, summer jobs, and relevant extracurriculars that might make you more desirable to employers.

Experienced Candidate Resumes

If you have a few years of work experience under your belt, experts suggest bumping your resume up to two pages. Along with listing your college information and past jobs, you should detail your work accomplishments on this longer resume. For example, let hiring managers know if you revamped training procedures or rewrote workplace documents. Additionally, you can include skills and talents, such as experience with computer systems or knowledge of a foreign language.

How to Stand Out From the Pack

Of course, length isn’t the only important factor when crafting a resume. Understanding that recruiters spend just a few minutes – or less – perusing a candidate’s application, savvy candidates take steps to make their resumes stand out. One of the best things you can do is find ways to include keywords from the job description on your resume. If the hiring manager scans a resume – or runs it through a computer program to assess relevance – including these keywords will help ensure you stay in the game.
