Tips to Make Your First Day at a New Job Go Smoothly

How to Prepare for a New Job

Starting a new job?  Feeling a bit nervous?  It’s not uncommon to feel uncomfortable before starting a new job.  You have spent a great deal of time and energy obtaining this new position, so it’s perfectly normal to feel some first-day angst.

Here are five tips to make those jitters disappear and allow you to rock on your first day of work.

Plan your outfit

You do not need to run out and buy a brand new outfit.  This is a common mistake many people make.  Check your wardrobe and find something you will be comfortable in, while still looking sharp.  Be sure to tone down the jewelry, accessories and fragrances or colognes.

Every employer has their own idea of dress code.  Wait until you know what your new company’s expectations are before investing.  Remember, you are trying to fit in so you don’t want to stand out.

Define yourself

Write a brief summary of yourself, including background, people you have worked with in the industry, previous supervisors, etc.  Make this into your elevator speech to use when you are being introduced to managers and supervisors. They may ask where you came from and about your background, so this little speech will come in handy.

Come prepared

On your first day of employment, there will most likely be a lot of paperwork to complete for human resources.  Make sure you have the documentation you will need.  You may want to email your new supervisor or director to inquire what you should bring such as driver’s license, social security card or work visa.

Also, bring the tools of your trade.  Have everything packed in your bag the night before so you are ready to go.

Arrive early

Few things impress a new employer more than an eager employee.  Show your enthusiasm by arriving early, fresh and ready for work.

 Do your research

To make a great first day impression, many human resource directors recommend you check out the company thoroughly.  Google your new employer to see what comes up for events and happenings in the industry.  See if they have other social media such as Facebook or LinkedIn. Knowing the corporate culture will make your first day a much easier transition.

Don’t forget to check the company’s website for blog posts, tweets, mission statements and products.  This will give you additional insight into your new employer’s thoughts, expectations and company culture.
